Phillies 5, Braves 4

on .

Mike Remlinger blew it in the bottom of the 8th, allowing a 2 run homer to Aaron Rowand to turn a 4-3 Braves lead into a 5-4 Phillies win. Smoltz battled through 7 innings without his best stuff, allowing 7 hits, didn't walk anyone, and struck out 5. He allowed all his runs in the 3rd, and was in line to get the win. But Remlinger (1-2) was allowed to pitch to 5 hitters, only getting one of them out. Ray got a double play to get out of the inning, but Tom Gordon blew the Braves away in the 9th. The Braves fell behind 3-0 in the 3rd, but got 3 runs in the 6th off of Myers including a 2 run homer by Andruw. In the 8th, the Braves strung some hits together to take the lead. Offensive contributors: Andruw Jones was 2-4 with his 9th homer. Chipper Jones was 1-3 with a double, a walk, and scored. Edgar Renteria had an infield single to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Before the game, the Braves placed Lance Cormier on the disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle. Ken Ray will probably get most of his innings. They recalled Peter Moylan for some reason--he has a 7.02 ERA, a 2.08 WHIP, and has given up 11 hits, 7 walks, and 9 strikeouts in 8.2 innings at Richmond. I guess they like him because he pitches sidearm. (Meanwhile, Chad Paronto has an 0.61 ERA, Ricardo Rodriguez has a 1.69 ERA, and even Travis Smith has a 1.33 ERA.) Hopefully the thinking is that they want those guys to get work while Moylan is the last pitcher out of the bullpen in Atlanta. Also, Tyler Yates was signed today. He'll start in extended Spring Training then go to Richmond. The Braves drop to 3rd place with the Phillies moving to 2nd. The Mets are in extra innings, if they lose the Phillies move within 4 games. If they win, the Braves move back to 6 games down. Florida and Washington are out of it.
