Chop Chatter for 4/11/07

on .

Up today in Chop Chatter:† Which Braves player had his number retired by his high school this week?† Will Hank Aaron reach out to Barry Bonds?† What was the awards ceremony before Tuesday's game for?† And last but not least...What does David Justice think about being inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame? Monday night in Lilburn, GA, Jeff Francouer's alma mater (and mine too) retired the #12 baseball jersey he wore while a member of the Panther squad.† A giant replica now hangs on the outfield fence next to the only other number retired by Parkview, that of former coach Hugh "Buck" Buchanan.† Jeff was emotional as he spoke of his time spent on the field at Parkview with his former teammates and Coach Buck.† He was on the verge of tears more than once and his voice quivered as he spoke about the people at Parkview who had touched his life.† He said the only time he was more nervous than this night was his first night in the Majors.† He seemed genuinely touched by his alma mater's gesture and threw out the first pitch of the Varsity game later that evening. Hank Aaron has publicly commented that he won't be reaching out to Barry Bonds while he quests to break Aaron's record.† He also said he wouldn't be in attendance for the record-breaking homer, even if it was in Atlanta.† Instead, he surmised he'd go to Florida and play some golf.† He said he has no problem with Bonds or anyone else breaking the record, just that he feels no need or inclination to be involved.† Many have said that Bonds wants to connect with Aaron, but reports indicate that he has never really tried to contact Aaron.† If Bonds is waiting for Aaron to come to him, it sounds like he better not hold his breath. Before Tuesday night's game, Andruw Jones and Brian McCann were presented with their awards for last season.† Jones got his ninth consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award.† McCann got his first Silver Slugger Award and also the Braves Player of the Year Award.† Look for both of these guys to stack up†this kind of†hardware for years to come. When David Justice was asked by AJC writer, Carroll Rogers, if he was surprised about his upcoming induction into the Braves Hall of Fame, he said he was indeed surprised.† He added, "The New York Yankees have embraced me more than the Braves ever did and I only played there for two years.î† Apparently this comment was based on the fact that the Yankees have involved him more since his retirement, letting him throw out first pitches and such.† He also does some pre- and post-game analysis for the Yankees.† Those who read my first column on this matter can only imagine that this latest comment makes me even less thrilled that he's our first inductee from the 90s players.† But, what's done is done.
