Wickman Hits the DL

on .

†Update: The Braves are calling the official reason for his DL trip upper back tendinitis. Well this makes a bit more sense than just a monumental collapse in ability for Wickman. The veteran closer has been placed on the 15-Day DL after three straight appearances where he just has not looked like himself. No reason has been given but I would assume his back was acting up with all the stretching that he has been doing on the mound recently. In his place, Chad Paronto has been activated from the DL and will be with the team tonight. Good Timing! We replaced one ground ball pitcher with another and have two great ones in Paronto and Moylan now in the pen. The depth chart has always seen Mike Gonzalez utilized before Rafael Soriano almost every game so far, so Soriano will probably see the majority of the save opportunities with Tyler Yates handling the 7th inning and Gonzalez in the 8th. That could obviously change with how the left and right handed hitters are stacked in the lineup. In some other good news for the Braves, the Mets placed Orlando Hernandez, one of their best starters so far and Jose Valentin, their starting second baseman on the DL. The Mets expected that 160 innings for Hernandez on the year would probably be the maximum they would get for the season, but now they have to resort to Chan Ho Park, who sports a 7.29 ERA in 4 starts for the Mets AAA affiliate. Damion Easley will take over second base, but is a downgrade over Valentin, who has been a key part of the bottom of their lineup.
