Devine Down, Prado Up

on .

Right-hander Joey Devine, as expected, was optioned back to Richmond today to make room for infielder Martin Prado. Devine had come up to replace Edgar Renteria after he went on the DL and provide reinforcements to an overworked bullpen, but the Braves chose to add some more depth for their middle infielders since both Yunel Escobar and Kelly Johnson are starting every day. Prado may get the start today in place of Johnson, who struck out four times the last game he faced Oliver Perez. If he plays well in his stay wit the team, it wouldn't be surprising to see Prado take Chris Woodward's spot on the bench once Renteria is activated. Dave O'Brien at AJC said that the reason the announcement came so late is that they wanted to test Peter Moylan's back in a bullpen session before sending down Devine, but all is fine. Prado hit only .179 (5-28) in his first stint with the Braves this season but if he plays up to his talent, he compares favorably to Yunel Escobar. He should be able to provide a good average, decent speed and plate discipline, with good defense off the bench, although his power leaves a bit to be desired. Prado is hitting .320/.382/.428 in his 93 games for Richmond this season with four home runs and five stolen bases (four caught stealing).
