Hudson out to Down Mets

on .

With the amount of comments our articles have been receiving lately, I am going to start posting pre-games to give you guys a clean slate to discuss the night's game in. The game is schedule to start at 7:35 ET and for you it will be carried on Sports South, however I will have to suffer through the nonsensical rants of Keith Hernandez and the Mets' broadcasting crew up here in Connecticut. Performing before the game will be Tito and the Gunshow with their hit, "Mark Teixeira". You can see both their original video and Sports South performance at their website and AJC has a nice article on them. Tim Hudson will take the mound tonight against John Maine in the opening game of the series. Maine has struggled mightily lately with a 7.77 ERA in the month of August after an impressive start to his season. Hudson had his incredible 9-game win streak snapped last time out with a 5-inning, 5-run loss against St. Louis. The Braves' ace is going for his third win of the season against the Mets and hopefully can continue to pitch against them like he has this season (1.93 ERA vs. NYM). We know the Braves have been struggling, but the Mets have had problems of their own leading up to this series. New York is coming off a four-game sweep by the Phillies and in four of their last five games the team has scored only two runs. As Jose Reyes goes, so do the Mets. Their spark plug and superstar shortstop is batting a mere .227 in his last ten games and the rest of the infield with the exception of David Wright hasn't been doing much better. That isn't the end of this team's problems though. The bullpen, one of their biggest strengths this season, is in tatters from top to bottom. Billy Wagner has had three of his four blown saves this season come in the last month with an ERA north of six over that span. Jorge Sosa is now one of the more reliable relievers in that pen, just to give you a sense of how things are going. The main key for the game is going to be jumping on John Maine early. He is a good pitcher but not one with outstanding composure on the mound. Early trouble and lots of pitches have been known to send the 26-year old into downward spirals.
