Braves were Interested in Haren

on .

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports said in his latest article that the Braves were interested in Dan Haren before he was traded, but that they couldn't come close to matching the offer that eventually sent him to the Diamondbacks. It's definitely an interesting note although very surprising. Frank Wren said that he was done with the rotation after acquiring Jair Jurrjens from Detroit in the Edgar Renteria deal. Rosenthal is usually a very reliable source but I can't help but think this was just speculation and a real-life game of telephone that warped it into a legitimate rumor before it came to Rosenthal. It just wouldn't make sense for the Braves to even show interest, knowing that the price would likely empty out the farm system, and there was widespread interest. Tim Dierkes of MLBTR mentions speculated that this may mean the Braves could be in on Orioles starter Erik Bedard as well. Again, I'm not buying it. Bedard is arguably better than Haren and could come at an even higher cost. The Braves have really put a lot into this year but there is a point at which you have to draw a line between consistency and mortgaging the future.
