Braves Fall to Marlins in Ten

on .

Buddy Carlyle started yesterday's game off with a three-inning shutout.† Unfortunately, a 1 1/2 hour rain delay, six pitchers, six runs and one extra inning later, the Braves fell to the Fish.† Carlyle had a great start before the rain delay, going three innings and giving up only one hit and recording two strikeouts.† Then the rain set in and both teams were forced to replace their starters, which led to each team going through a total of seven pitchers each.† Emerging from the rain delay 0-0, the Braves brought in reliever Oscar Villarreal.† He went 2 2/3rds innings and gave up five hits and four earned runs while recording six strikeouts.† Ledezma came in and finished off the sixth inning, giving up one hit and recording a strikeout.† He was followed in the seventh by Paronto who gave up a hit.† The eighth brought Moylan who gave up a hit and recorded a strikeout.† Then came the ninth, which saw Wickman give up a homerun for the second straight day.† The Braves had taken the lead on a two-run Escobar single at the top of the ninth, so Wickman ended up with his fourth blown save of the year.† The game went into extra innings and for a† few minutes it looked like the Braves had a†chance.† Chipper singled, then a couple of batters later, Diaz singled.††Salty came up to the plate next and on a wild pitch to him, Chipper and Diaz advanced to second and third.† Unfortunately, Salty struck out and that was the end of the Braves†second comeback bid of the†afternoon.† † Despite the loss, the Braves had eleven hits yesterday.† Coming up with two each were Escobar, Diaz and Salty.† Other contributors yesterday were Renteria, Chipper, Andruw, Woodward (who started at first, much to my dismay) and KJ.† Andruw's hit happened to be his 13th homerun of the season, which brought his average back up to .199.† The Braves traveled to Los Angeles last night and will start a seven-game stint on the West Coast†with the first of four against†the Dodgers tonight.† All-Star John Smoltz (9-4, 2.98 ERA) will take the mound against Derek Lowe (8-7, 3.03 ERA) in a 10:10 p.m. start.
