Braves Interested in Dmitri

on .

Ken Rosenthal mentioned talks between the Braves and Nationals regarding switch-hitting first baseman Dmitri Young in a recent post. Rosenthal said that talks got to the point where the Nationals assistant GM was actually scouting the double-A Mississippi team. Rosenthal also mentions that talks have cooled off because Nationals GM Jim Bowden asked for too much in return... what a surprise. If you remember to last year, Bowden only ended up with picks and not even a first rounder because he decided not to trade Alfonso Soriano, who was signed by the Cubs, at the deadline. The same thing is basically going to happen to Young. Young has had some off the field issues but from every report has become a model citizen this year and is not an issue in the club house. Young is enjoying a career year, hitting .339/.390/.512 in a pitcher's park so the power should go up even more if he is traded away. Obviously the Braves have not been happy with the production they have gotten from Scott Thorman and Jarrod Saltalamacchia is only slugging .364 batting left-handed. Rosenthal says it would open up the Braves to send Salty down to AAA but I would bet he'd stay up if a deal did happen. Scott Thorman is out of options as the article mentions, but I think he'll be moved because of his lack of production and options in a trade. Possibly this one. The Nationals system is bare but even worse off pitching-wise. If they were scouting Mississippi, likely targets would have been Matt Harrison, Jo-Jo Reyes, or Brandon Jones considering the reports of them asking far too much and those would be considered... far too much. Maybe Bowden learned from his mistake last year and will lower the price or maybe the new ownership will put more pressure to trade him but if his price stays this high, Young will leave and the Nationals will end up with a couple picks.
