Braves Still Interested in Tex?

on .

Dave O'Brien at AJC is reporting that one of the big rumors making rounds at the All-Star game was that the Braves and a couple other teams were still interested in Rangers star first baseman Mark Teixeira. These rumors popped up a while ago but since Jarrod Saltalamacchia moved to first, they had died down. O'Brien mentions that Teixeira is eligible for free-agency after this season but he still has one more arbitration year before hitting the open market, where the Boras factor and his desire to play for his home-town Orioles could make it next to impossible to sign the 27-year old first baseman. So that begs the question, is a year and a half of Teixeira worth what the Braves would have to give up? O'Brien says that it would probably take no less than top prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia and another young player. It seems like speculation on his part but is realistically what the Rangers would be asking. Teixeira, who is on the DL with a left quad injury, is expected to be activated on Friday. The Rangers first baseman is a former Georgia Tech standout and has hit 30+ homeruns with 100+ RBIs in each of his past three seasons for the Rangers, while hitting .302/.405/.554 so far this season. Saltalamacchia is hitting .315/.364/.481 in limited playing time and at least two of those numbers should be going up if he gets in the lineup every day. The production the Braves would get from Salty everyday at first is probably not that far behind what Teixeira could do in Atlanta. Sure, Teixeira is a gold glove first baseman but trading away Salty means we trade in five and a half years at least of him for one and a half of Teixeira. Add onto that, that this other young player would probably be a useful pitching prospect and I don't see how this deal would get done. I still believe the only chance of the Braves trading Saltalamacchia is for a young, cheap top-of-the-rotation starter still under team control. Guess what? No one is going to trade one of those so Salty probably isn't going anywhere.
