article up regarding a possible Braves acquisition of Mark Teixeira, which may be a done deal. Here is the quote from the story.Joel Sherman of the New York Post has an
An executive from another team that had been trying to get Teixeira said his organization had become convinced Teixeira-to-the-Braves was done. In fact, this executive said it was his team's belief that the commissioner's office already had the trade in hand and was deciding whether to approve the deal because the Rangers were going to pay a substantial piece of Teixeira's remaining contract this year. A spokesman for the commissioner's office denied this was true. The price tag that Sherman mentions in the article is Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Matt Harrison, and Elvis Andrus with not mention of a reliever coming over from Texas in the deal. That bounty for Texas, one AL Executive quoted in the article says is "their two best position prospects, and best pitching prospect." Harrison probably carries the most value of any of the pitching prospects since he not only has a great pitcher's body and good stuff, but he is polished and close to the big leagues. It is much more debatable that Andrus is the Braves second best position prospect though. Sherman goes on to say that the Braves are still the clear front runners, but that the Angels, Dodgers, and Red Sox are still very much in it. This sounds awfully fishy and the fact that this executive assumed the deal was done takes away from it. This report has started off with people saying that the deal is done but Schuerholz would not trade that bounty and not get a reliever in return. I can almost guarantee that. If it is true, this is the kind of deal that could be looked back upon as a horrible trade for the Braves. That is far more than Teixeira should warrant given his contract situation. More likely than not, this "done deal" should be taken with a grain of salt. I have not lost faith in Schuerholz and because of that, I just cannot believe that he would lower himself to the ability of a Bill Bavasi or... Jon Daniels for such a deal. Also, Dave O'Brien of AJC is reporting that the deal on the table may have Brent Lillibridge and Kyle Davies replacing Elvis Andrus and Matt Harrison while Schuerholz is still asking for a reliever-- Eric Gagne, Ron Mahay, or CJ Wilson -- from Texas, especially if Andrus is part of the package. I have to say, I would warm up a lot more to a deal like that than what Sherman is saying.
