Jones Boys Lead Braves to Win

on .

After dropping three straight games in a disappointing fashion, the Braves came back to beat Mark Hendrickson and the Dodgers 5-2 on Wednesday. Both the offense and pitching turned in solid performances today in the first win of the series for Atlanta. Both teams looked like they would put crooked numbers up early but somehow each starter got out of it. Chipper got the scoring started with a two-run single in fifth. Brian McCann and Yunel Escobar added an RBI single and sacrifice fly in the sixth to put the Braves three runs ahead. Andruw Jones kept up his quiet hitting streak and although he struck out four times in the game, his one hit, a homerun was a big insurance run as well as being the 1,000th run scored of his career. Jeff Francoeur kept up his hot hitting as well, collecting two hits in four at bats to bring his average up to .288 and Yunel Escobar was again impressive in the leadoff spot with a three for four day as well as a sacrifice fly. Chuck James got the start and while it wasn't dominating, the southpaw kept the Braves in the game. James picked up the win going five innings of one-run ball while allowing four hits, two walks, and striking out four. Ledezma was a bit disappointing again but I think this could be a product of overuse, which is affecting almost the entire pen lately. The All-Star break should do wonders for the pen with a couple days of rest. Peter Moylan did a good job of bailing Ledezma out with a double-play ball in a bases loaded no outs situation, and Yates and Soriano held the Dodgers at bay in the seventh and eighth. Bob Wickman, who has struggled lately came on to get a patented Wickman save. What would a save by the big man be without a bit of sweat? Tim Hudson tries to split the series tomorrow against a very tough opponent in Brad Penny, who is 10-1 so far this year. The game is at 10:10 PM eastern time and is finally on TBS again. I have a couple notes and observations:
  • John Smoltz will be shut down until the All-Star break and will not participate in the All-Star game but the latter part has been known for a couple days. It seems like it is just fatigue and he should return after the break but he will have the shoulder examined in Atlanta.
  • John Kruk listed Bob Wickman as one of the two MLB players along with Dimitri Young that could beat Joey Chestnut in a hot dog eating contest. Through all the cracks at his weight by Kruk I just couldn't help but thinking that Kruk could probably eat more Bob Wickmans in twelve minutes than Wickman could eat hot dogs. You don't get to make fun of Wicky's weight when you outweigh him by 40 lbs. Sorry Kruk.
  • Jerry Crasnick has an article up on players in their contract year who are affecting their value with this season's performance. Andruw Jones leads the list and you can probably figure his value is down. It's an interesting read and he suggests Boras could do a one-year deal like what he did with Jeff Weaver. Needless to say, that hasn't really worked out the way they planned it for Weaver.
