Ledezma Designated for Assignment

on .

Left-hander Wil Ledezma, who was acquired in exchange for Macay McBride was designated for assignment today. The team now has ten days to trade, release, or send him to the minors. The last of which would required him to pass through waivers, which almost definitely would not happen. This comes at a good time as it is two days away from the trade deadline and the southpaw could be included as a small piece in a deal the Braves are putting together. Ledezma showed incredible stuff for a left-hander and had great upside as a starter, but unfortunately for him, the Braves decided to carry a more valuable bullpen piece instead of holding onto him. The pitcher compiled a 7.71 ERA in the 9.1 innings he pitched in an Atlanta uniform. Right-hander Jose Ascanio was re-called from double-A Mississippi. Ascanio showed a good command to go with a mid-90's fastball and high-80's slider much like the arsenal featured by Tyler Yates in his recent call-up. This is a bit of a surprising move for me considering that Joey Devine is still in the minors. It is no question that Devine is a better pitcher and he has already been in the majors this year so it wouldn't waste an option. Maybe they want to take it even slower than I had imagined with him. Devine is out of option years though so we can say with all certainty that he'll be in the majors next year.
