John Smoltz, who was scheduled to start against the Cubs on Monday, will have his start pushed back until Friday. Smoltz, who had been bothered by the strained shoulder received a cortisone shot after his last start against the Marlins. He said that his shoulder is feeling better but also that he thinks the extra rest is a good idea. His next start will be the opening game against the Indians.
Lance Cormier was placed on the 15-day DL today with dead arm. I hate to break it to anyone who is still holding onto hope about Cormier because of this, but this isn't what is making him bad. He is a control pitcher and he had none when he came up so this probably played a factor in him being god-awful, but he is a fringe player and will be his entire career. I couldn't for the life of me understand how so many fans said Cormier had more potential than Villareal.
No shock here, but Buddy Carlyle has been recalled from Richmond to take Cormier's spot on the active roster and Smoltz's spot in the rotation. Carlyle was nothing short of incredible in his last outing, going seven innings allowing one hit (a solo homerun), three walks, and striking out five to earn his first major league win in a while.
