Braves Scout Percival

on .

I speculated that the Braves could be a suitor for former Angels closer Troy Percival when he announced his comeback. Now, Ken Rosenthal over at foxsports.com confirmed that the Braves were one of the six teams represented at a workout for the veteran reliever. In the article, Rosenthal says that the season-ending injury to Mike Gonzalez is pressuring them to go out and get pen help. Percival was clocked between 88 and 90 mph but scouts believe he should be able to throw around 92 mph when the adrenaline of pitching in front of tens of thousands of people. On top of that he still has a good curve and seems to be healthy after a forearm injury cost him his last two seasons with the Tigers. This obviously isn't the old Percival and it looks like the claims of him hitting 97 mph by his agent seem to maybe be a bit of exaggeration. Still, it sounds like he is still someone that could be effective. Right now Chad Paronto and Oscar Villarreal have not been all too consistent so adding him to maybe Blaine Boyer or Joey Devine wouldn't be a bad idea depending on the price. You can never have too much bullpen depth.
