Braves win back-to-back against the Cubs

on .

After spluttering along for a week or two the Braves put together back to back wins to close within 2.5 games of the Mets, who suffered a second consecutive reverse against the Tigers. It all kicked-off in the first inning when Cubs starter, Ted Lilly,† drilled Renteria and got himself ejected in the resulting melee. Anyway, the hullabaloo calmed down and it wasn't until the third that the Braves took the lead on the back of a KJ home run and a Frenchy RBI. Buddy Carlyle was on the mound for the Braves and pitched well through four but gave up a couple in the fifth on a Fontenot triple and a Soriano sac fly. He then gave up a couple of long balls to Barrett in the sixth and Fontenot in the seventh before being taken out of the game. The Braves rallied with a three-run eighth with back to back doubles from Salty and Thorman, who both scored. Harris scored the go-ahead run on a Ryan Dempster wild pitch. Wickman pitched the ninth to claim the save. All in all a good end to the series for the Braves. I'm not sure they look like a division winning team just yet, and they are in a little funk for sure. Thr Braves have an off-day Monday before a daunting interleague schedule that sees series against Minnesota, Cleveland, Boston and Detroit. Man, life is unfair.
