Carlyle Hit Hard in Loss

on .

The Braves have now been outscored 15-0 in the past two games following the 11-0 beat-down the Braves were handed at the hands of the top team in baseball. The pitching imploded today.† Buddy Carlyle showed why he, at 29, has only had a couple cups of coffee in the majors. After watching him go 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs I realized that the league has caught up to him. You just don't get very far with a straight 89 mph fastball and an inconsistent curve. He had a good run but most likely will be sent down. The one real bright spot tonight was Oscar Villareal. The Braves long reliever came out in relief of Carlyle and worked 2.1 perfect innings with four strikeouts and threw 20 of his 27 pitches for strikes. Peter Moylan came in to work the seventh and gave up one hit, a homer to Manny Ramirez. One of the biggest shocks to me was Soriano's performance. He was just awful, giving up three runs in his one inning of work. Still, he is going to be a great closer down the road as it seems like he needs the adrenaline of a close game to dominate. Joey Devine came on for the ninth in his first appearance of the season. The former first-round pick gave up two singles to start off the inning, but after a bloop fielder's choice where Jeff Francoeur gunned down Jason Varitek at third (on one of the best throws I have ever seen), Devine came back to get two strikeouts to end the inning. Again, there just isn't that much you can say about the offense. Only five hits in the absence of Andruw Jones were put up against Boston pitching. The entire outfield had one hit a piece as well as singles by Chipper and Renteria, but five singles compared to the same number of homeruns and doubles that the Red Sox hit just doesn't see all that great. Brian McCann continued a disappointing season as he dipped his average to below .260. Just imagine how we'd be doing if Andruw, McCann, and Thorman would be hitting. Up next is a weekend series against the Tigers. Not only are we getting an opponent coming in on the team plane, but a new teammate in Wil Ledezma who will be coming over with the Tigers. The first game is a matchup of two veterans as John Smoltz will take on Kenny Rogers in his first start of the season on Friday. Hopefully he is a bit rusty.
