Salty to the Rays?

on .

Yet again Salty has been mentioned in connection with the Devil Rays. Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times has this one.
A big name for the Rays to keep in mind in trade talks: C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, whom the Braves say is available.
In the past we have seen Saltalamacchia connected with both Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli. Most baseball analysts agree the team should trade Crawford, but the public response of the Rays front office has been that he is untouchable. That leaves Baldelli since the team isn't exactly in a position to trade pitching (although Jamie Shields would be nice). The Braves are getting very good production out of the Harris/Diaz platoon in left, so this would be a replacement for Andruw next year. Taking this into account, any deal would most likely take place over the off-season. I really don't want Baldelli. The guy has talent but it would be like acquiring Rich Harden, they are both injury prone. A player that hasn't been talked about but I could again see is BJ Upton. I'm not sure of the Rays willingness to trade him but a lack of defensive prowess in the infield (11 errors at second in 45 starts this season) may force him to make a move to his outfield. Upton is young and has great range, a good arm, and a very good bat. Someone is going to be the odd man out with Elijah Dukes, Baldelli, Crawford, and Delmon Young in the outfield with Evan Longoria and Reid Brignac in the minors coming quickly to take over the infield. I would be intrigued definitely by an Upton-Longoria trade. Any comments and opinions are welcome and I'm sure there will be. Also, I would like to thank our loyal readers. When the three of us joined MVN we were getting just over 400 hits a day and only a couple months later we just surpassed 800 hits for the first time. Keep reading, spread the word, and hopefully we can continue to grow.
