Braves Get Hit Where It Hurts
Kelly Meter:† 0 for 3 tonight with two strikeouts, bringing his line to .275/.405/.478.† However, he did have the only walk off Bergmann and proceeded to steal second.
Final Score:† Braves 1, Nats 2
Not only did the Braves suffer a 2-1 loss to the Nats tonight, but ace John Smoltz left the game injured.† He appears to have a dislocated right pinky finger curtesy of Austin Kearns.† Kearns was caught in a rundown between third and home and Smoltz's finger appeared to get caught as he tagged out Kearns.† He was in obvious pain and left the game.† The only word so far is that he seems to have a dislocated right pinky finger.
Before exiting, Smoltz had a great start.† He gave up only one hit in the first six innings and an additional three during the seventh inning.† He gave up only two earned runs in six and two-thirds innings.† Unfortunately, Bergmann had an even better night for the Nats.† He gave up only two hits in eight innings, one earned run and one walk.† He also had a career-high 10 strikeouts.†
The one earned run off Bergmann came off the bat of Brian McCann, who homered to start the eighth inning.† The only other hit was†by Diaz in a pinch hit situation in the ninth.†
The bullpen appearance tonight was by Yates, who went for 1 1/3 innings, gave up no hits and struck out two.† Really, the pitching tonight was fantastic on both sides - it was the offense that was lacking!
