Chop Chatter for 5/15/07

on .

Chop Chatter fell victim to my brutal end-of-the-semester schedule and law school graduation, but it's back!† On deck today: 1) How is Smoltz doing? 2)†Has Chipper been sidelined for even longer by his latest freak injury? 3) Any chance Salty will take a shot at 1B?†4)† Do the Braves have new owners? We all know that John Smoltz can be Chuck Norris-esque, always tough both mentally and physically.† It should come as no surprise then that he'll be planning to make his scheduled start against the Red Sox in Boston on Saturday.† (Anyone want to buy me plane and game tickets to see my two favorite teams play?† Aww, come on....)† Anyhow, the news is that Smoltz finger is looking better today.† It was even well enough for him to get in his scheduled golf outing to celebrate his 40th birthday today.† He plans to throw a bullpen session tomorrow or Thursday and will reevaluate the situation afterwards.† I worry about our shot at taking†a series from the Red Sox without him, so here's wishing him luck for a speedy recovery! An injury update that isn't so optimistic is that of Chipper Jones.† He's still having pain in his palms at the base of the thumbs, especially in his right hand.† He'll be having x-rays to be sure that the injury is really just a bruise. Is†Jarrod Saltalamacchia†(aka Salty)†prepping to make the move to first base?† My favorite Braves columnist, David O'Brien of the AJC, reported seeing Salty take some grounders at first before tonight's game.† Is this foreshadowing a move to first?† I don't know, but David says he looks good over there.† For those who've been reading my columns for any amount of time, you know I've always been a proponent of moving him to first.† However, as the season has progressed, I've grown more and more fond of Thorman.† He's looking terrific both defensively and offensively.† With that in mind, I stand by my prediction that Salty will go by way of a trade before the end of the season. An update on the ownership issue:† the owners meet tomorrow to vote on the proposed sale to Liberty Media.† It's considered pretty much a done deal, so look for an announcement tomorrow afternoon that the Braves have new owners. I missed the first half of the first inning typing this post and turned on the tv to find the Braves up 2-0 (curtesy of a Willie Harris single and Renteria homer)...better go watch!!† Update:† I've decided to attend next Friday's Power Lunch with Francouer, KJ and Willie.† These lunches always include a Q&A session, so start emailing me any questions you all want me to ask!† The email is This email address is being protected from spambots.
