Davies Leads Braves to Win

on .

Kyle Davies again just looked like a completely different pitcher than he did at the beginning of the year. Today he again hit his spots working down in the zone with a 93-94 mph fastball and had good movement and control of his curve. Davies ran into trouble a couple times during the game but allowed only one run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adam Laroche. Davies finished with his first win since September of last year, going seven innings with only the one run allowed and two walks. Tyler Yates came on in the eighth and allowed a hit and a wild pitch but also struck out two for a scoreless inning. In the ninth, Mike Gonzalez got the chance to close out the game against his former team and after allowing a leadoff walk, got Adam Laroche, the player he was traded for to ground into a double play and then struck out Ronny Paulino to end the game. The offense put on a hit parade tonight ending with 13 in all, but the big blow came in the sixth inning with, like always, two outs. With two out and the bases cleared, Chipper Jones hit a double that went in and out of Xavier Nady's glove as he hit the wall. After nearly ending the inning, Zack Duke then got hammered for a homer to straight away center by Andruw Jones and then on the very next pitch Jeff Francoeur took the southpaw over the left field fence. Following two more singles, Scott Thorman hit a pinch-hit double to score the fourth run. The Braves got a huge scare in the fourth when Chipper Jones went up and over Jose Bautista at third to avoid the tag and landed awkwardly on his left shoulder, but it proved to just knock the wind out of him and he stayed in the game. Congrats to Bobby Cox, who moved up to 4th on the all-time managerial win list into a tie with Sparky Anderson with his 2,194th career win. Kelly Meter: Johnson went 1/5 with a double and two strikeouts, although one was an awful call where the ump had to look around the catcher to see where the glove was after he had framed the pitch. The Braves send Chuck James to the mound tomorrow for game two to take on Tony Armas at 7:05 ET.
