Links for 12/19: Norton, WBC, Moving On

on .

  • Greg Norton agreed to a 1-year deal worth $800,000 to remain with the Braves. Norton, 36, was an important role player for Bobby Cox as his pinch hitting specialist. He hit .278/.435/.444 off the bench and had an .841 OPS against right-handed pitchers. Looks like a nice signing.
  • The Braves will again be sending two players to play for Team USA in the WBC. Chipper Jones will make his second appearance, while Brian McCann is replacing Jeff Francoeur as Atlanta's second representative. It's not really the best thing for a team to have their catcher and injury-prone best hitter to be playing extra games but Bobby Cox has already said that he won't keep anyone from playing.
  • Ken Rosenthal says that Rafael Furcal was the only middle infielder the Braves were interested in and will not pursue another one, instead shifting their focus back to a starter and a power-hitting outfielder.
