Winter Meetings: Day 3

on .

Update #2: Rosenthal has another update, this one saying that the Braves are prepared to lose John Smoltz if another team guarantees significant money. The Braves more than likely would offer a deal with a low base salary and incentives. I still would be downright shocked to see John Smoltz pitching elsewhere this season so don't get too worried.

Update: Ken Rosenthal says the Braves upped their offer to A.J. Burnett to five years and $80 million. Dave O'Brien agrees that the Braves have put five guaranteed years on the table.

The big news today is the Yankees' signing of C.C. Sabathia to a 7-year $161 million deal. As the top free agent starter, Sabathia's signing sets the market and it will be interesting to see if there is a domino effect with the lower tier free agent starters, including A.J. Burnett.

  • Speaking of Burnett, Jon Heyman reported last night that the Yankees have upped their offer for the right-hander by a couple million dollars over the full five years (fifth year is a vesting option), but as Dave O'Brien pointed out, the cost of living difference between New York and Atlanta might nulify the extra money the Yankees are offering.
  • Ken Rosenthal also chimed in on Burnett, quoting a major league source who said that talks between the Braves and Burnett "progressed through the night".
  • Dejan Kovacevic updates the Braves-Pirates rumors, saying that Pittsburgh could ask for Jordan Schafer in a deal. Schafer seems close to untouchable but it's still worth keeping track of these rumors.
  • Scott Merkin debunked the Dye to Atlanta rumors, reporting that the Braves and White Sox have not spoken since the Javier Vazquez deal.
