Guess What? We Have Ryan Drese!

on .

As you no doubt know by now, while no one was looking last year the Braves picked up Ryan Drese in August and stashed him on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. As Bill Shanks points out, he joins a long list of people who can "compete for the fifth spot in the rotation: Jair Jurrjens, Jo Jo Reyes, Jeff Bennett, Ryan Drese, and even Charlie Morton." So who is Ryan Drese? He's a guy who somehow managed to win 14 games in Texas in 2004 and had an ERA 0.85 runs below league average despite averaging 4.2 K, 2.5 BB, and 10 hits per nine innings that year. In the majors or minors, he hasn't had a K/9 above 6.5 or given up less than a hit per inning in the majors or minors since 2002. His career major league ERA is 5.31 and he possesses a career WHIP of 1.57; in the minors, he's at 4.13 and 1.32. In other words, his performance won't be all that hard to predict. He'll be terrible. On the other hand, he won't necessarily be worse than Mark Redman, Jo-Jo Reyes, Kyle Davies, Buddy Carlyle, Lance Cormier, Anthony Lerew, and Jeff Bennett, the Braves' #4 and #5 starters last year, who managed a combined ERA of 6.19, WHIP of 1.59, with 6 K, 4 BB, and 10 H per nine innings. With competition like that, Ryan Drese will fit right in!
