Wren Not Looking for a Starter

on .

After all the rumors and speculation about which starter the Braves would target at the deadline, Ken Rosenthal now says the Atlanta front office will be looking for a bat and not a starter as the July 31st trade deadline approaches. According to Rosenthal, the Braves are content with their in-house options and would rather target a right-handed left fielder. As it stands right now, Atlanta's rotation consists of Tim Hudson, Jair Jurrjens, Jorge Campillo, Jo-Jo Reyes, and Charlie Morton. It certainly isn't a bad rotation but is Frank Wren really content with it? Hudson has been pitching like a true ace, while Jair Jurrjens certainly hasn't disappointed as the number two starter. The only problem I see is that the Braves have three unproven and relatively untested starter bringing up the back and there are questions about all three. Reyes and Morton are both young, have both struggled at some point this season, and are both prone to collapses in their command. It looks like both have taken big steps this season but at the same time, you can't leave that to chance if Bobby Cox and Frank Wren are serious about contending this year. Campillo is looking better and better over time but we can't completely put to rest the scenario that he could just be a flash in the pan (ie. Buddy Carlyle of 2007). Rosenthal mentions both Mike Hampton and Tom Glavine's expected returns around the All-Star break. Certainly both would be a boost but you can't count on Hampton to even pitch, much less pitch well and we still don't know if Glavine is going to make a full recovery that soon. It seems like Frank Wren is really taking a gamble on this one if Rosenthal is correct. He's got three unproven guys in the rotation and is counting on two injured veterans to be his reinforcements. If Glavine and/or Hampton experience a set back in the next month, I bet there'll be some renewed interest.
