Braves Monitoring Garcia

on .

It's not exactly a secret that Frank Wren may be on the market for some starting pitching. The top of the rotation seems set with Hudson, Glavine, and Jurrjens but after that it has looked like a revolving door. Hampton is on the shelf, Smoltz is moving back to the pen, Bennett is in some sort of hybrid relief-starter role, Chuck James has been a disappointment, and Jo-Jo Reyes hasn't exactly been consistent in his starts this season. Wren could be looking outside the organization come July and according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com,  Freddy Garcia could be an option. The Braves have reportedly been one of at least seven teams monitoring the right-hander's progress as he rehabs from shoulder surgery. The 31-year old hurler does boast a career ERA just north of four, however last year that number was 5.90 in 58 innings for the Phillies. It's an interesting idea since this team is going to need an innings-eater  in the rotation and Garcia wouldn't cost anything in terms of talent. The problem is that it's very difficult to come back from shoulder surgery and I'm not sure you could really count on him for innings or production. It's good to always keep your options open, but I can't imagine they'd sign Garcia without giving guys like Charlie Morton a shot to prove themselves first.
