9/4 Game Thread: Jo-Jo Gets Another Chance -- Wait, It's Parr!

on .

First-pitch strike... first-pitch strike... first-pitch strike... first-pitch strike... Jo-Jo's season has been pretty bad. But his performance has actually been a bit of a parabola: from bad to mediocre to putrid, as Fangraphs aptly illustrates. In his first 5 starts, he went 24 2/3 IP, giving up 16 ER on 34 H and 10 BB, for a 5.84 ERA. In his last 5 games (one in relief), he has gone 20 2/3 innings, giving up 22 ER on 32 H and 17 BB, for a remarkable 9.58 ERA. But in the middle, he had 9 decent starts, where he pitched 53 innings, and gave up 22 ER on 47 H and 20 BB, for a 3.74 ERA. All in all, his season line is a 5.49 ERA in 19 games, 98 1/3 IP, a terrible K/BB of 73 K against 47 BB, with an embarrassing 1.63 WHIP. The thing is, he was an effective major league pitcher for about two and a half months. That guy is still in there somewhere, if only he could throw first-pitch strikes. Update: Wait... stop the presses! Jo-Jo's a new father, so he's been scratched for James Parr, whom I profiled a couple days ago. The Dreaded Washington Nationals are starting a new callup of their own, 21-year-old CuraƧaoan Shairon Martis, so this will be a matchup of kids making their major league debut. Martis started the year in AA, earned a promotion to AAA, and pitched even better when he got there, with a K/9 over 9 and a good K/BB ratio of 42/17 in 41 1/3 innings, and a 3.02 ERA. He only gave up 2 homers in AAA. We don't do well against pitchers we've never seen, as a rule. Fortunately, Martis is a righthander, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he gave our hitters fits. I'm eager to see how Parr does, though. If he can write himself into our plans, that would solve a whole lot of our problems. A hearty mazel tov to Jo-Jo; here's hoping Parr can make the most of the blessed occasion.
