James Parr had a very impressive Major League debut last night. The 22-year old right-hander, who has received quite a bit of attention since he was promoted to Richmond, blanked the Nationals for six innings to earn the win. With game one in the books, the Braves will look to Jair Jurrjens -- another 22-year old --to try and take the second game of this four-game series.
Jurrjens will also be looking to rebound from easily his worst month the season. The righty went 1-3 with a 5.73 ERA in six August starts. Jurrjens is almost certainly just experiencing fatigue, after eclipsing his previous career high in innings by more than twenty. He is certainly capable of going out to the mound shutting down any offense but I wouldn't expect much from him down the stretch. Right now, it's just a matter of getting the Braves' interim ace work to strengthen his arm for next year.
Jair's opponent for tonight's game is Jason Bergman, who the Braves knocked around for six earned runs in just 4.1 innings during his last start. The Washington right-hander always has the potential to dominate on the mound, but like Jurrjens, has struggled as of late with a 5.77 ERA over his last ten appearances. I'd get the popcorn out and get ready for quite a bit of scoring.
