Now they got even worse news. Johan Santana and Jeff Francoeur, AKA the Mets' best pitcher and most productive hitter, may both need surgery -- and I'm not sure whether it's worse news for them that Francoeur needs surgery or that he's the best hitter they had left. (He says he plans on playing through a torn ligament. We'll see how long that lasts.) Including the two of them, that's more than $82 million worth of injured players, and every single one of their stars with the exception of Gary Sheffield, who was a bargain-bin pleasant surprise.
So here's the question: should I actually start to feel sorry for these guys, for humanitarian reasons? Should I feel a twinge of sadistic glee at just how awful a season our rivals are having, or should I call my Mets fan friends and offer to bring them a casserole while they cover up their mirrors and wear colors of mourning?
I'm almost sorry for them. Almost.
