Yeah, It's Been a Little Slow Around Here Lately

on .

I know that it's been a little slow around here lately but I should be able to post more regularly now that I'm back at my dorm and actually settled in again. I'd be lying if I said that we've missed a lot during our down time. There's been a lot of speculation but nothing really substantial. Anyways, here's what we missed:

  • Ken Rosenthal indicated that the Braves have scaled back their search for an outfielder after making large financial commitments to Derek Lowe and Kenshin Kawakami. Rosenthal says that a trade is still possible or Frank Wren could just wait out the free agent market and see if there are any bargains at the end.
  • Dave O'Brien updated the Will Ohman situation, saying that the lefty reliever would still like to return to Atlanta and the team's offer is on the table.
  • Mike Gonzalez and the Braves agreed to a 1-year $3.45 million deal to avoid arbitration.
  • Rosenthal mentions that the Braves are a good match in a Brian Roberts trade, but that the team is neither willing to pay his salary or give up the prospects it would take to acquire the second basemen. Oh well.
  • Mark Bowman reported that Tom Glavine's second throwing session since undergoing surgery went better than expected. The veteran left-hander threw 30 pitches, including some changeups, without pain. The Braves could still bring Glavine back, which would allow Jorge Campillo to move to the pen and Tommy Hanson some more time in the minors.
  • It's getting close, so close that Dave O'Brien has this year's non-roster invitees. A couple of names which stand out are Jason Heyward, Tommy Hanson, Freddie Freeman, and Jordan Schafer. The most intriguing name for me however was Emiliano Fruto. Fruto, a formerly well-regarded Mariners prospect, is a reliever with a great arm and impressive stuff, whose career has been side-tracked by control issues. At 24, he's one of those pitchers who you hope the coaching staff can turn around and get a couple useful seasons out of.
