For cereal, a real, honest trade deadline rumor! FOXSPORTS.COM (via Rotoworld.com) just reported this little tidbit:
The Braves are trying to add one more reliever. They are one of the many clubs that inquired on A's right-hander Michael Wuertz, but are in heavier pursuit of a more under-the-radar, unidentified option, according to major-league sources.
Unfortunately, it turns out that the Angels have also been inquiring about the Wuertz, so he may come at a bloated price. I'm not sure if Kelly will get us this one with Eric Patterson being recently called up and showing some potential, but the A's might bite. KJ is the perfect buy low candidate at the small cost that Billy Beane might desire. Just to give everyone an idea of how good Mike Wuertz has been this year, here is his current line and his ZiPS RoS (i.e. Rest of Season) projection:
2009: 47.1 IP, 3.23 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 11.79 K/9, 2.47 BB/9, 42.3% GB%
ZiPS: 28.0 IP, 3.54 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 9.96 K/9, 3.54 BB/9
He has been ridiculously good so far this year, so we shouldn't expect those numbers, but anything close to the ZiPS line would be a major improvement over Peter Moylan.
Reading further past the Wuertz news, you see there is an "under-the-radar, unidentified option", whatever that means. I will speculate, though, it is probably this guy.
