Series Recap - Phillies @ Braves
The offense. 21 runs in 3 games. Matt Diaz was a one man wrecking crew, going 7 for 11 with 4 runs. Martin Prado went 7 for 12 with 4 runs and 6 RBI. Those two were the absolute lifeblood of the offense, and to think, at this time last week, they were both bench players. Its crazy. Even more crazy to think about is that Diaz's platoon mate in left, Garret Anderson, hit a HUUUUUUUGE 2 run homer last night to ice the game. The Braves have already thrown up 5 on Washington this evening...so watch out folks, the offense appears to have been awakened.
Starting pitching. Vazquez & Lowe each allowed 2, Jurrjens allowed 1 (unearned) and only 1 hit. Yeah, thats a pretty effective job from your starters. Jurrjens really didn't need to be perfect with the way the offense performed on Wednesday, but neverhteless, its a bright spot. Unfortunately, Vazquez & Lowe each got no decisions, Lowe because of Mike Gonzalez's minor meltdown, and Vazquez because of the offense lying dormant for 6 innings. Its all good though, if the offense has its groove back, watch out.
Bullpen. Mike Gonzalez allowed 2 runs off a pair of solo homers on Wednesday. Those were the only runs allowed in the pen's 8 2/3 innings pitched against the Phillies. I approve. What jumped out at me is how efficient the bullpen was with their pitches...no one threw more than 20 pitches in an inning aside from Gonzalez on Thursday. I can live with that.
Injuries. The offense wasn't at full strength for most of the series, with Nate McLouth missing all 3 games, and Yunel Escobar not starting 2 games. It really didn't matter, as Gregor Blanco filled in adequately for McLouth in center, while Diory Hernandez....filled in for Escobar at short, but homered in the blowout on Wednesday. Good enough for me.
Nothing. I'm thrilled with the way the series went. No complaints whatsoever from me.
This series was fantastic. Absolutely FANTASTIC. The first series win (and sweep for that matter) since May 22-24 against Toronto. I can't think of anything really bad. Lets take a look...
