HOT or NOT - 6/12/09 edition

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Heres a little weekly feature I've come up with to help recognize the top and bottom performers of the week for the Braves, and I have ever so wittily named it HOT OR NOT. Every week, usually on Thursday or Friday depending on when our weekend series starts, I'll spotlight a couple players that are doing really well, and a couple that are doing...not so well. Without any further ado, who is HOT, and who is NOT? Braves record for the week: 3-4 HOT Chipper Jones, 3B: .308/.419/.731, 4 runs, 1 3B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 5 BB. Its Chipper Jones, what more can you really say? His near cycle from Sunday fueled his fire, but he threw up a pair of 2 hit games at the beginning of the Pirates series as well Brian McCann, C: .364/.417/.773, 2 runs, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBI. The man they call Heap laughs at the man he protects in the lineup, as he throws up an OPS eerily resembling my SAT score from 6 years ago. McCann got involved in all of the last 7 games too, but thankfully 2 of them were pinch hit appearances Javier Vazquez, SP: 0-1, 1.93 ERA, 0.43 WHIP, 19 K. Its embarrassing that JV only got one decision, and it was a loss, after his performance this week. He didn't walk a single batter and only allowed 6 hits. His K/9 for the week was 12.21...the only negative was that he allowed 2 home runs, which accounted for the only runs he allowed. NOT Eric O'Flaherty, RP: 1-0, 5.40 ERA, 1.80 WHIP. An off week for the shockingly efficient EOF. He was used in all 3 games of the Milwaukee series, sandwiching a 4 pitch outing where he somehow allowed 2 hits, a run, and got an out, in between 2 scoreless ones. After a 1 pitch appearance in the opener against Pittsburgh, he labored through an inning on Wednesday, and allowed what would end up being the winning run (but he doesn't get the loss since the Pirates never lost the lead). Greg Norton, 1B: .000/.167/.000, 2 BB, 2 K. So some people were clamoring for Norton to get more playing time, and this is how he rewards you: a hitless week. Thems the breaks, I guess. Norton was rewarded for his abysmal play with a 15 day vacation. Kelly Johnson, 2B: .143/.200/.179, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 BB, 7 K. The mystery of Kelly Johnson continues...pretty depressing when you really think about it. Due to injuries across the board, Johnson will continue to be trotted out to his position every day, until Kotchman comes back, when Martin Prado will begin to steal some playing time from him.
