Per a request from reader Ryan C...
The Braves have 9 players in the World Baseball Classic, on 6 different teams: Chipper Jones and Brian McCann playing for the United States, Gregor Blanco for Venezuela, Jorge Campillo for Mexico, minor leaguers Scott Diamond and Bryan Dumesnil for Canada, Manny Acosta and minor leaguer Yeliar Castro for Panama, and Javier Vazquez for Puerto Rico.
So, as we're nearing the end of the first round, how are they doing?
Brian McCann: 1-2, HR, 3 RBI.
Chipper Jones, unfortunately: 0-7, 1 BB. (He strained his right oblique muscle, but will stay with the US team, hoping to participate in the second round. I'm hoping he takes it easy on himself, though. It's a long season.)
Gregor Blanco: 3-5, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 SB.
Javier Vazquez, 1 GS, 1-0, 1 GS, 4 IP, 3 K, 1 BB, 0 R, 0.00 ERA.
Scott Diamond, 2 G, 0-0, 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.00 ERA
Yeliar Castro, 2 G, 0-0, 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 K, 1 BB, 13.50 ERA
Bryan Dumesnil and Manny Acosta did not enter a game, and their teams have been eliminated. (Panama had a rather sorry Classic. They lost to the Braves 11-2 in an exhibition, and then promptly got shut out in their only 2 games in the Classic, exiting competition without scoring a run.) Jorge Campillo has not pitched, but Mexico is still alive, with a 1-1 record in the double elimination competition.
