Game Recap - 8/19/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Nationals 6 (52-69), Braves 2 (71-50) WP: Lannan (5-5) LP: Lowe (11-11) Just not a good game today. Derek Lowe started and...pitched like he normally does. Shockingly, he got through 7 innings to give key members of the bullpen a day off. He didn't walk anyone and struck out 6, but was just sloppy all-around, allowing hits in crappy situations and showing an inability to get batters out when he needed to. Another goat? Eric Hinske. He missed catching a popup in the 3rd that allowed a run-scoring single a pitch later. Lowe also eschewed walking Roger Bernadina with one out and a man on third in the 5th to set up a double play. Naturally, Bernadina doubled in Nyjer Morgan, and was singled in by Ryan Zimmerman a batter later. The Braves were sloppy offensively too. A leadoff single led to a line drive double play in the first. The Braves brought in 2 in the 6th on a double by Matt Diaz, and would have men on 1st and 2nd with one out, a prime chance to tie the game. Alex Gonzalez routinely fouled out to first...and Diaz, who had taken off for third on the pitch, was doubled off second to end the inning. Prime opportunity for runs, in the crapper. The Braves would have one more chance in the 8th, getting the first 2 batters on with walks. Naturally, Bobby calls for a bunt with his best hitter, Martin Prado. Lead runner thrown out, Prado nearly thrown out at first too. The inning would end without a runner even reaching as far as third base. But if you're looking for offensive goats? Melky Cabrera and Eric Hinske went 0 for 8 with 5 strikeouts. Yep, thats a dealbreaker. Omar Infante stayed hot, reaching three times. Gonzalez and Jason Heyward each reached twice. And...that was it, really. The bottom of the order was a soul sucking succubus, 11 instant outs on the day from the bottom 3 slots in the lineup. Bad, bad bad. Tomorrow, the Braves begin a weekend series in...Chicago, to take on the Cubs. Thankfully, Derrek Lee will play in his first game as a Brave. Also thankfully...the Cubs aren't a good team this year, 21 games under .500 and losing again today. Could be what the doctor ordered. Tomorrow is a day game (shocking, right?) and will feature Ryan Dempster and Jair Jurrjens. Gotta love JJ starts...he's been great since coming off the DL.
