Game Recap - 8/23/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Rockies 5 (64-60), Braves 4 (73-52) WP: Betancourt (4-1) LP: Venters (4-1) SV: Street (11) The mojo just wasn't really flowing tonight. Tim Hudson didn't really pitch that badly...4 earned in 6 innings isn't what he's been doing, but its not the end of the world. He only walked one Rockies batter, and struck out 5. The big 2-run homer by Ian Stewart in the 4th inning that made it a 3-0 Rockies lead was ugly though, because it was a high pitch that he just kinda whacked to dead center that just kept going, and going, and going...blegh. The Braves rallied back to tie it in the 7th, but then Jonny Venters (shockingly) gave the lead back. His inning started with a single to right by Carlos Gonzalez on an 0-2 pitch...what a killer. Gonzalez then stole second on a blown call, as he was out..but harping on one call in a game like this is stupid, because there were so many more chances. After a walk to Troy Tulowitzki, the decaying corpse of Todd Helton came up. He had 3 hits on the night already and had pounded the crap out of Hudson. Venters got in front of him 0-2, and Helton worked the count to 3-2...and slapped a single up the middle just past Alex Gonzalez's glove. Gonzalez scored, Rockies lead. Venters got out of the inning, but the damage was done. Braves offense...yeah, this one smarts. Jason Heyward singled in his first 3 plate appearances, then bit the bullet hardcore in his final 2: grounding into a double play in the 7th with the Braves down a run, and striking out to end the game in the 9th. Omar Infante had 2 hits, but hit a dribbler on the first pitch in the 9th inning to waste his at bat. Martin Prado had 2 hits, including a big 2-run homer in the 5th to make it a one run game, and he scored what was then the tying run in the 8th, but grounded into a fielder's choice in the 3rd with men on the corners (on - you guessed it - the first pitch!). Alex Gonzalez had a fantastic 11 pitch at bat in the 4th, pulling some sick shots foul down the left field line, before flying out with 2 men on and 1 out. Rick Ankiel would strike out to end the inning and strand 2 more men. Ankiel redeemed himself in the 7th by hitting his first homer as a Brave, but a hit in that situation would have been huge. 2 overall killers to the offense right now: Brian McCann is 1 for his last 18 (which I touched on in today's HOT or NOT...he's been slumping badly since Chipper went out), and Derrek Lee is 1/15 as a Brave (with the one hit coming with the Braves up 7 runs in the 8th inning yesterday). You cannot get production that bad in the 4th & 5th spots in the lineup and expect to get a good number of runs on the board. The top of the lineup...they did their jobs tonight. For as much as I crapped on those 3, they went 7/14 tonight. When you're getting 2 guys in the lineup after them that have been automatic outs though...it sucks, and your offense is going to struggle as a result. McCann and Lee need to get things turned around. On the bright side, the Phillies lost. Lead in the east is still 2.5. Tomorrow's pitching matchup is a doozy. Jorge De La Rosa goes for Colorado. He was a breakout kid last year for the Rockies, winning 16 games (note: his ERA was 4.38. Clearly ace material. COUGH). This season, he's only started 12 games, but has allowed 3 or fewer runs in 6 straight starts. Ruh roh. He'll be opposed by the $15 million man, Derek Lowe. His ERA has been under 5.00 since June, so thats a positive...right? He's had more groundouts than flyouts in his last 4 starts, and that trend really needs to continue tomorrow in Coors.
