Injured Player Update

Written by Joe Lucia on .

A lot of injuries going on for the Braves right now, lets take a peek at whats going on. In probably the most important news for the team, Martin Prado was activated from the DL today and will be in the starting lineup against the Nationals. He''s hitting in the 3-hole and playing third base. Either Brandon Hicks or Diory Hernandez will likely be demoted to Gwinnett today to make room for Prado on the roster. My guess would be Hicks, though the two are essentially the same player. Neither has much of a future outside of that of a bench player, so it is what it is. Eric O'Flaherty is still rehabbing in Gwinnett, and should be ready by the end of the week. He's pitched 2 innings, allowed 1 hit, and struck out 2. So he appears to be fine. Either Mike Dunn or Cristhian Martinez will be demoted when he's ready to come off. My money would be on Dunn, since Bobby just loves having a long man that he won't use like Martinez in the pen. This isn't really an injury, but more of a demotional update...Kenshin Kawakami is starting in Gwinnett, and...well, he's pitching. In 5 2/3 innings, he's allowed 10 hits, 2 earned, a homer, walked 3, and struck out 4. Oh Kenshin, what is the team gonna do with you and your horrible contract? Speaking of horrible contracts...Nate McLouth is struggling in Gwinnett. His slash line reads .234/.333/.394. Yeah, thats not good. He does have 5 homers (with no other extra base hits) and 5 stolen bases (without being caught), and a 13:15 BB:K ratio...but regardless, he's an experienced major league. He should not have an OPS in the low-.700s at this level. Its really not a good sign at all. Its looking more and more likely that the contracts of Kawakami and McLouth are going to be written off as sunk costs...shame really, because they've both shown in the past that they've got the ability to contribute at the major league level. That about takes care of everything for now...Nationals series begins in about 4 hours, and this is a nice opportunity for the Braves to pick up some ground in the East will Philly drawing the Giants this week.
