Well...it may not be the biggest deal, but at least its something.
Frank Wren got to talking with Dayton Moore and made a move today...it's a little bit of a complex situation. Going to Atlanta are Rick Ankiel and Kyle Farnsworth, and heading to KC are Jesse Chavez (YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!), Gregor Blanco, and Tim Collins.
Now, lets look at this one piece at a time.
Rick Ankiel is sure as hell not the answer. I think everyone knows this. He strikes out more than McLouth and walks less, and has more power. He can play all 3 OF positions, but the problem is, he plays them pretty badly. Horrible defender. Pretty much...he's a living body that's not Nate McLouth.
Kyle Farnsworth comes to Atlanta for the second time in his career. He was lights out the first time, and his career has gone downward since. He's experienced a nice little renaissance this season for the Royals, with a 2.42 ERA and a K:BB ratio even at 3.00. His homer rate is also way down. Farnsworth is a *huge* upgrade over Chavez, and will help solidify the bullpen.
Now, going to KC...
Jesse Chavez is a waste of a roster spot. I'm thankful the Braves got something of value for him. He's a horrible baseball player, and I'm thanking christ I'll never have to see him as a Brave ever again.
Gregor Blanco is a 4th or 5th OF at his peak. No power, patient hitter, decent speed...thats all really. Bench player.
And as for Tim Collins...well he sure he strike dudes out, and looks like he's got a good future somewhere in a bullpen. But the Braves are so loaded with pitching depth that a guy who projects as a reliever really isn't something that the team should be dragging their feet to keep.
So I guess...its a good deal, just for replacing Chavez with Farnsworth. As for Ankiel...I'll need to take a wait and see approach with him. Hopefully moving back to the NL will help him a good deal.
The Braves also acquired Wilkin Ramirez from the Tigers for a PTBNL. Whatever. He's an AAA body that will replace Mitch Jones, who was traded yesterday to the Pirates for cash.
