Game Recap - 7/2/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 4 (47-33), Marlins 3 (37-42) WP: Venters (3-0) LP: Nunez (3-2) What an exciting win...first off, I'd like to apologize for the lack of a recap on Wednesday. The Fanball servers were down and weren't fixed until yesterday afternoon...and by then, who cares about something that happened 18 hours ago? Regardless, here we are. Tonight was an absolute pitchers duel for the first 6 innings, as Josh Johnson of the Marlins and the Braves Kris Medlen each allowed 1 run and put a quality start in the books for their team. The Braves pushed a run across in the 7th to take the lead and held it until the 9th...until Billy Wagner allowed a game tying solo homer to Gaby Sanchez. So not cool. Wagner completed the rest of his inning without incident, and gave way to Jonny Venters, who threw a scoreless 10th. That led to the 11th inning, where the Marlins took the lead after a botched squeeze resulted in a run getting across after a brainfart by Brian McCann, throwing home with the bases loaded as opposed to just running the baserunner back to the bag and getting the out. But I digress...these things happen once in awhile. Offensively, tonight was really about 2 players who reached base 3 times apiece: Martin Prado, who singled 3 times and drove in the Braves first 2 runs, and Gregor Blanco, who tripled, singled, walked, and scored the Braves first 2 runs. Quite a little duo there. Its almost getting to the point where I'd put serious thought into putting Blanco in the leadoff spot, sliding Prado down to the 2 hole, and banishing Melky to the 8 spot. It seems like the logical thing to do...but whatever, the offense is clicking pretty decently right now, so whatever. The Braves would win the game in the 11th without getting an out. Brian McCann led off with a walk, and Troy Glaus doubled to right to put men on second and third for Omar Infante, who came in for Eric Hinske in the 9th. After a tough at bat, Infante dropped a single into left, scoring McCann and Brandon Hicks, who was pinch running for Glaus. Game, set, match. It was a real solid, hard fought win for the Braves tonight. DIVISIONAL UPDATE: Mets win, Phillies lose. 2 up on New York, 5 up on Philly. I approve of this message. Only the Yankees and Red Sox have more wins than the Braves this season. Gotta love it. Tomorrow's pitching matchup: Anibal Sanchez for the Marlins, the suddenly struggling Tommy Hanson for the Braves. First pitch is at 4:10, which means its a Fox national game and that everyone aside from the deep south will be blacked out from it. Awesome, can't wait to listen to it on radio when I get home from work.
