Game Recap - 6/29/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Nationals 7 (34-44), Braves 2 (45-33) WP: Stammen (2-2) LP: Lowe (9-6) Remember me? I'm back from my weekend in the tiniest state in the union, and I come back to see...this. Yeah. Derek Lowe started and cruised through his first 4 innings. Then he allowed 4 runs over his final 5 outs. It all fell apart the third time through the order...it wasn't all terrible for Lowe though. He threw first pitch strikes to 15 of the 27 batters he faced, struck out 5, only walked 2, and got 8 groundball outs. Not horrible...but on a night where the Braves offense was in a terrible funk, it wasn't good enough. Now, looking at the offense. It was essentially the Martin Prado show. He reached base 3 times, drove in the first Braves run, and scored the second run. Remember how I was whining about his lack of power earlier in the season? Well his ISO is up to .149 and I'm feeling really stupid right now. With Chase Utley being placed on the DL today, its looking more and more likely that Prado will be starting the All-Star Game for the NL at second base. Life works in funny ways sometimes...the only other Brave to reach base multiple times was Gregor Blanco with a pair of singles. Matt Diaz made his first appearance since April, coming off the DL today to take the roster spot of Jason Heyward who was put on due to his thumb issue, and Diaz proceeded to strike out on 5 pitches. Same ol, same ol. Rubber match of the series is tomorrow evening, and the matchup is JD Martin for the Nationals, and Jair Jurrjens for the Braves, who will come off the DL. Cristhian Martinez will be optioned to Gwinnett once Jurrjens is activated tomorrow...oh drat, that means the team is down to one junk time reliever. Grrrrrrrrrrrrreat. It's already been confirmed that Kenshin Kawakami will be moving to the bullpen, with Jurrjens taking his rotation spot. It'll be a treat to see what Kawakami can do in relief.
