This was a game of blown opportunities. The Braves stranded runners in the 9th, 10th, and 11th innings. The Braves blew a 3 run lead the inning they took it. Hell, the Braves had a runner on third in the 9th AND 10th innings, and couldn't get him in either time. It was a mess, and quite frankly, the team didn't deserve to win. The Braves only scored 1 run that didn't come by way of homer...but the offense wasn't bad, pounding out 12 hits and seeing every starter reach base yet again. I'm not a big advocate of situational hitting, but the team went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Thats something this team has been excelling in with the way its been playing lately, and it totally crapped the bed today.
Tim Hudson...well, he got a quality start, but days like today are not going to cut it. Only 1 strikeout and 2 walks in 7 innings? Are you kidding me? That's not going to fly, and I really don't care how great his GB% is. Case in point: 5th inning. Hudson gets a DP grounder to Troy Glaus, who makes a crappy throw to short and gets no one. Next batter, 2 run single, tie game. You can't always leave things up to your defense because once in awhile, YOU WILL GET BURNED. Today was one of those days where Hudson did what has been working for him all season, and he got burned. The bullpen was great...until Jesse Chavez came in in the 11th and promptly lost the game, because thats what he does. Huge tip of the cap to Jonny Venters, who struck out 4 in 2 perfect innings. Looks like more high leverage innings could be heading his way. Also, shame on Bobby Cox for not using Billy Wagner in the 11th. Gotta preserve your closer for the save situation and not the high leverage situation, right? Ridiculous logic.
Braves will be back tomorrow at 9:40 PM in Arizona, with Derek Lowe going for the Braves against the Diamondbacks Dan Haren. Should be a nice pitching matchup, despite the way Haren has pitched this year. Series preview will be up...late afternoon, early evening. HOT or NOT should be up slightly after that but before the game starts...and of course, the weekly prospect report will more than likely be up this evening unless something comes up.
Also, the Phillies DID lose today, so the lead in the NL East remains 2 games...would have been great to get it back up to 3 though...
