Game Recap - 5/16/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 13 (18-19), Diamondbacks 1 (15-23) WP: Hudson (4-1) LP: Haren (4-3) OK, so this is what happens when the Braves offense gets fully on track and shows its true power. Every starter (including Tim Hudson) reached base not once, but TWICE. The Braves pounded out 8 extra base hits, 4 homers and 4 doubles. The offense was pretty much fully powered by 3 men today: Martin Prado, Troy Glaus, and Eric Hinske. Prado is starting to hit for a little power, and is getting back into a hitting groove, while Glaus is turning into what the Braves envisioned when they signed him this winter, and Hinske is proving he can deliver in a starting role, even if his BABIP is through the roof. Those 3 men combined to go 9 for 14 with 5 runs, 9 RBI, and the 4 aforementioned homers. Pretty solid day from 3 hitters, if I must say so. Not that the Braves needed any offensive help. Tim Hudson put it all together today and turned in an absolutely dominant outing. 4 baserunners, 6 strikeouts, and 1 run in 8 innings is exactly what the doctor ordered after last night's bout of unlikely hops that Tommy Hanson suffered through. Hudson hasn't allowed more than 3 runs in any start, and now has turned in quality outings in 7 of his 8 starts. Considering that at this point last year, he was still rehabbing from Tommy John...yeah, pretty solid. I'm still not sold on his peripheral abilities...he'll turn in a start where he limits the walks and maxes the strikeouts like he did today, and follow it up with one where the total opposite is true, as was the case on Tuesday in Milwaukee. Its something to keep an eye on in the future, but I'm hoping to see more starts like today. I'd like to apologize for the lack of game recaps the past 2 days, and the lack of a preview for this series. I had my commencement yesterday, and was caught up in all of that hoopla the past couple days. But now, all that is over and I can focus a lot more on my writing. The Weekly Prospect Report will be up this evening, and HOT or NOT will be up tomorrow, along with a mini-series preview for the Mets series...its only 2 games, so don't expect a ton of analysis. The preview that will be posted on Wednesday (or Tuesday night) for the Reds series will follow the same template, and then we'll be back to the normal for the Pirates series over the weekend, which I will be likely attending in Pittsburgh. Until then everyone, savor in another Braves series victory...the team is now 10-5 since the end of the losing streak of doom, and appears to be playing to potential. Things are turning around!
