Game Recap - 5/17/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Mets 3 (19-20), Braves 2 (18-20) WP: Pelfrey (5-1) LP: Lowe (5-4) SV: Rodriguez (6) This is one that stings...the Braves had chances in the last 2 innings to tie the game, but couldn't seal it. Brian McCann struck out with the bases loaded to end the 8th (on a high fastball nonetheless), and Nate McLouth struck out with the tying run on second to end the game. SO CLOSE. But alas, the Braves bit themselves in the ass a few times in this game, grounding into 3 double plays and Martin Prado getting quasi picked off in the first inning...that Prado play in the first really set the tone for the game. The coup de grace for me was Nate McLouth breaking for the plate in the 8th on contact. He got caught in a rundown for the second out of the inning. It was the right play...in a situation like that, you need to go on contact. But man, it just sucked for that to happen. There was one really big bright spot tonight, and that was Eric Hinske. 3/4 with a homer and a double...dear god is he on fire. Nate McLouth, despite his game ending strikeout, had a couple hits. He's getting back in the groove...thankfully. I said the Braves had a good chance to win if Lowe held the Mets to 3 runs...well, he did. Lowe actually pitched shockingly well tonight. He completed the 7th inning for the first time all season, and did what he had to do: 3 runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts. It looked like the wheels were going to come off a couple times, like after Rod Barajas's 2 run double in the 2nd inning, or when Lowe allowed a couple baserunners in the 7th before getting out of the jam with 2 pitches. Lowe held it together, but the 3 runs just proved to be too many. On a related note, there is clearly something wrong with Brian McCann. Not only did he go hitless and only see 14 pitches in 4 at bats tonight, he launched ANOTHER throw into center field. His eyes have some serious issues, and he really needs to get them taken care of before we might need to start worrying about this being something that affects his career, let alone his season.
