Game Recap - 5/21/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 7 (22-20), Pirates 0 (18-24) WP: Hudson (5-1) LP: Ohlendorf (0-2) What a great win for the Braves last night! The offense put some runs on the board, and the pitching was excellent...well, in theory at least. Tim Hudson threw 8 shutout innings for the Braves, but what people will likely ignore is the 4 walks to only 3 strikeouts he had. This concerns me greatly. You *cannot* succeed when you walk as many as you strike out, because luck will eventually run out and you're going to get bit in the ass. Hudson's strand rate is currently a cool 86%, and his BABIP is .213. Both of those numbers are WAY off of his career average, and his FIP is more than 2 runs higher than his ERA. He's going to fall back down to earth, and there's no bones about it. It is damn near impossible to succeed with a strikeout rate of under 4.00 per 9, and when your walk rate is nearly the same...look out. Lets talk about some happier thoughts now! Jason Heyward. As I was discussing last night with Christian from Phlying Pucks here on the Fanball network, he's pretty good at baseball. 3 more hits and 3 more RBI, adding a homer and a double to the mix as well. Last night's homer was Heyward's first in 2 and a half weeks, helping to silence some of the critics talking about him slumping a little bit. The lowest his OPS has been all month is .939, and we're talking about him slumping? Come on now. Other offensive highlights for the Braves: Brian McCann homered and singled, Martin Prado scored 3 times, and the duo of Chipper Jones and Eric Hinske each walked and singled. Yunel Escobar continues to struggle, only walking in 4 plate appearances. His OPS for the season is only 12 points higher than that of the much-maligned Melky Cabrera. Now that is frightening. Tonight's game is going to be odd...its not on actual television anywhere due to Fox deciding to air its game of the week at 7 tonight. There appears to be a link to a broadcast on MLB.com on the MLB.TV gamepage...not that it matters to me, since the MLB is deciding to black me out of Pirates games this year since I'm apparently in their viewing area...despite not getting FSN Pittsburgh. Slick, guys. It'll be Derek Lowe and Charlie Morton tonight, so expect more runs to be put on the board.
