Game Recap - 5/23/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Pirates 3 (19-25), Braves 2 (23-21) WP: Dotel (2-0) LP: Saito (0-2) You guys remember yesterday, when I vented over Bobby Cox's bullpen use? About how Eric O'Flaherty, Peter Moylan, and Takashi Saito had all pitched in 4 games this week? Better make it 5. Was it really necessary to use Jonny Venters today for one out? The move to pinch hit for Venters in the 8th ended up paying dividends, and Eric Hinske hit a pinch hit, game tying homer. But seriously, there was no reason to drag each of those 3 guys into the game again. After 6 straight hitless outings, Saito has now allowed 6 hits and 4 runs in his last 2 1/3 innings over 3 outings. He got used 3 straight days, then got 2 off, then got thrown right back into the fire with 2 more days of use. He's obviously one of the team's best relievers, but to use him so much is one of those things that just kills me. As I mentioned, Moylan and O'Flaherty each also got into their 5th game of the week today...but that doesn't matter too much, because O'Flaherty is usually only coming in for a batter or two, and Moylan's first 3 appearances of the week totaled 18 pitches. Its bad to work them so much...but its not criminal like the case was with Saito today. Kris Medlen got the start, and was adequate. His arm still isn't totally stretched out, and he couldn't get through the sixth, the inning in which he allowed both of his runs. He only struck out two batters on the day, low for him. It was obvious coming into the day that Medlen would be lucky to get through 6, and that other members of the bullpen would have to be used...Venters and Jesse Chavez threw an inning and a third. Thats all. You're going to have to throw Cristhian Martinez into the fire eventually, why wait for a blowout to do it? You wanted to dump Craig Kimbrel back into the minors so bad because he wasn't getting work, and on a day where he could get some work, you don't even use his replacement? Stupid stupid stupid. I'm still angry about this bullpen usage, as you can probably tell. The Braves offense today was...a disaster. 8 hits off the Pirates pitching, and only 3 walks...and 2 measly runs. Yeah, Jason Heyward, Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, and Eric Hinske were all on the bench. But thats not an excuse. These guys are going to need off days once in awhile, and the bench must be able to produce when they need days off. This is going to sound odd...but I'm going to give a tip of the cap to Melky Cabrera today. He was one of 3 Braves to reach twice, with a single and a walk, and he also had an outfield assist to prevent the Pirates from tying the game in the 5th. Melky even had a stolen base! Its shocking as hell that he's no longer the worst hitter on the team, but here we are. Omar Infante singled and doubled, and David Ross produced in his one start a week with a pair of singles and a RBI. Yunel Escobar continued to suck wind, going 0 for 4 with a run scored. His OPS now sits at .497. Thats absolutely horrible. I'm pretty sure the Braves could call up Brandon Hicks, and he could do roughly the same thing. He was hitting in the 5 hole today, which is a joke in and of itself...pretty sad state of affairs right there. Then again, the 2 men in front of him (Troy Glaus and Martin Prado) combined to go 0 for 9. Well done, gentlemen. After an offday (thank god) tomorrow, the Braves head to Miami to take on the Marlins for the first time this season. Lovable loser Kenshin Kawakami will start for the good guys, while Anibal Sanchez will toe the rubber for Florida. Preview for that series will more than likely be up tomorrow, provided I don't waste my night playing Red Dead Redemption and watching the 24 series finale. HOT or NOT will also be up too. Damn, lots of work for me. And to make my life even more miserable, I have to finish the Weekly Prospect Report for tonight! Ceeeeeelebrate with content here at BravesHeart! Can I get up to 300 entries before the end of the month, and my one year anniversary of becoming the head man here? We shall see.
