Game Recap - 5/30/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 5 (28-22). Pirates 2 (20-31) WP: Saito (1-2) LP: Hanrahan (1-1) SV: Wagner (7) Kenshin Kawakami couldn't get a win, but he sure as hell tried his damnedest to get there. Kawakami threw 6 innings of shutout ball, before allowing a 2 run homer to Jeff Clement in the 7th to tie the game. His overall line: 6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. His walks have totally fallen off, while his strikeouts seem to have normalized...in his last 4 starts, he's got 16 strikeouts to 5 walks while allowing 8 runs in 23 innings for a 3.13 ERA...the Braves have won 3 of those starts, but Kawakami is still winless on the year. Poor guy. The Braves bullpen...perfect again. 7 hitters faced, 7 retired, 4 by way of strikeout. Eric O'Flaherty got the final out in the 7th, while Takashi Saito (who is still being overused by the way) and Billy Wagner only threw 22 pitches combined in the final 2 innings. The Braves offense...good, but not good enough. The team once again stranded a ton of guys, with a dozen left on today. The lineup had a different look today, with both Brian McCann and Chipper Jones on the bench. Both men would pinch hit in the 8th inning, reach base and score. Troy Glaus had himself a good day, driving in the first 2 runs of the afternoon with a sac fly and a homer...Glaus would also walk twice for another solid game for him. Jason Heyward struggled until the 8th inning, where he laced a 2-run triple into the gap to extend the Braves lead to 3 and close the door on the Pirates anemic offense. Yunel Escobar and Melky Cabrera both also came through, combining for 5 hits. Escobar is 7 for his last 19, though only one of those 7 hits went for extra bases. Cabrera on the other hand, is 11 for his last 29, and he's got an 8 game hitting streak. Melky's average is a respectable .243, though he still has no power or patience at the dish. Such is life. The Braves will return tomorrow at 1:05 for a special Memorial Day game against the Phillies at Turner Field. So it looks like I'll be keeping tabs on the game from work...great. Not like I have any plans this Memorial Day anyway! The struggling Tommy Hanson will go against Joe Blanton. Oh, and keep in mind...the Braves are now only one half game out of first place. Whoever ends up winning this series will be in first place in the division. Exciting stuff! Site notes. Series preview for the Phillies will be up...early tonight, I'll probably begin work on it after dinner. Weekly Prospect Report will be a little later, due to the fact that all of our affiliates have late starts tonight. Depending on how well MILB.com takes care of box scores, it might not even be up until tomorrow. One more: HOT or NOT may be up tonight, depending on how well ESPN.com takes care of *their* box scores...but everything will definitely be up by tomorrow, along with tomorrow's game recap. Man, I'm going to be busy as hell...
