Game Recap - 5/8/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 4 (13-17), Phillies 1 (18-12) WP: O'Flaherty (2-1) LP: Blanton (0-2) SV: Wagner (4) Just what the doctor ordered after an embarrassment at the hands of Jamie Moyer...sweet, sweet victory. In his first start in nearly a year, Kris Medlen was...spotty, yet effective. He only threw 4 1/3 innings, giving the bullpen a lot of unfortunate work, and allowed 9 hits...but he didn't walk anyone, only allowed a single run, and notched a trifecta of strikeouts. As I said...spotty, yet he kept the Braves in the game despite only getting half the outs. The bullpen today? Outstanding. Not one hit in 4 2/3. The bad, 4 walks and only 3 strikeouts. But hey, it takes some effort to score runs without getting a hit...and the Phillies couldn't get it done. Major league tip of the cap to Eric O'Flaherty, Craig Kimbrel, Peter Moylan, Jonny Venters, Takashi Saito, and finally Billy Wagner, who was gassing it up to 97 with ease. God, I'm going to miss him next season...but hey, Kimbrel's major league career is off to a scoreless start. Lets take a look at today's offensive explosion (chuckle...4 runs is an explosion!). In fact, some key members of the team are coming along a little. Chipper Jones continued his little hot stretch, as he reached 3 times and scored a run...his OBP is now higher than his SLG. Not what you really wanna see...ugh. Brian McCann also reached 3 times with a run, and HIS OBP is also higher than his SLG. What the hell is going on with the power on this team? Nate McLouth reached a couple times, as did Eric Hinske, who started the scoring with an RBI double. Good to see Hinske produce in a spot start in left today with Diaz getting the day off due to the horrible suckitude that's plagued him lately. Hell, even Melky Cabrera got into the act with an RBI single! ITS A CELEBRATION! Oh, Mr Prado, you're not allowed in...he's 2 for his last 25, and his OPS has dipped below .800. I swear to god, if he continues his downslide, and Kelly Johnson at least continues to walk on a regular basis...I will be even more angry than I am now. Dammit all. The Braves look to win the series tomorrow (ZUH!?) in a game that will probably be a loss, as Kenshin Kawakami goes to the hill looking for his first win of the year (argh, not one win yet) against Cole Hamels...who Phillies fans love to hate, for whatever reason. I'll tell you what, I'd gladly take Hamels in my rotation any day of the week.
