Game Recap - 10/2/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Phillies 7 (97-64), Braves 0 (90-72) WP: Bastardo (2-0) LP: Venters (4-4) Not a whole lot to say about this one. It was scoreless through 6, then it all hit the fan. Tommy Hanson threw 5 scoreless innings in his final start of the year and (big shock) received no run support. He'd leave after only 89 pitches, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Jonny Venters came in for the 6th, and escaped with the scoreless game intact despite allowing a leadoff double. And then, on Bobby Cox Day...Bobby trots Venters out for a second inning. You can imagine how well that went. He walked the leadoff hitter and got a grounder to third that could have been two, but definitely one...that is, until Brooks Conrad did the SAME THING he did last night, but worse, throwing the ball into center field. Everyone is safe. Then...dynamite. Venters would allow 3 RBI singles before getting pulled, and a 4th run crossed the plate on a Craig Kimbrel wild pitch. With the way this offense is going? That was enough. Philly would tack on 3 more in the 8th and 9th, thanks to bad pitching from Mike Dunn and HORRIBLE pitching from Takashi Saito, in his first game back since being diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis last week. The offense sucked, again. Can't sugar coat it at all. They sucked ass. 3 hits, 2 walks, not one runner to third base. Did I mention Philly started a rookie? Yeah. Vance Worley is apparently Cy Young now, able to shut down major league offenses at the snap of his fingers! Unfortunately, this doesn't resemble too much of a major league offense at this point, with some of the guys in the lineup right now. But it is what it is. The Padres won today, and are tied in the NL Wild Card race. So how does this break down? Its pretty simple. -Braves lose, Padres win: season is over -Braves lose, Padres lose: one game playoff on Monday in Atlanta between Braves and Padres for the wild card -Braves win, Padres lose: Braves are wild card winners and will play Giants in first round of playoffs -Braves win, Padres win: chaos erupts. Padres and Giants have a playoff game on Monday to determine the NL West champion, with the loser playing the Braves in Atlanta on Tuesday So in a nutshell, cheer for the Braves as usual, and cheer hard for the Giants. Tomorrow, the Braves will send season-long ace Tim Hudson to the mound for the must win (possible) season finale. The Phillies counter with Cole Hamels. But he will only be pitching a couple innings. Compounding the issue is the fact that APPARENTLY, Roy Oswalt will get some work for Philly too. Thanks for making it easy for us Uncle Chuck, really appreciate it.
