Brandon Beachy to Start Tonight

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Just announced on the Braves Twitter account! Jair Jurrjens tweaked his knee on Friday as I mentioned this morning in the HOT or NOT update, and has just been announced that he will not be starting tonight. Starting in his place will be the Braves minor league story of 2010, Brandon Beachy. We've talked about Beachy at length here, but here's a quick roundup of what he did in the minors in 2010. Over 119 1/3 innings in Mississippi and Gwinnett, Beachy went 5-1 with a 1.73 ERA, 5 homers allowed, 28 walks, and 148 strikeouts. After being promoted to Gwinnett in July, he walked only 6 and struck out 48 in 45 2/3 innings. For the season, he allowed a .211 batting average, and posted a FIP of 1.97. He's got fantastic control and misses bats very well. But there is a HUGE difference between the 4A bats he was facing in Gwinnett, and one of the best offenses in the game. Its going to be a huge test for Beachy tonight in Philly. Expect to see Cristhian Martinez tonight, because I don't think Beachy is going to last long in this one. If he's able to give the Braves 5 innings of 2 run ball, I'd consider the debut a success. To make room for Beachy on the 40-man roster, Brandon Hicks was placed on the 60-day DL with his broken finger.
