Game Recap - 9/1/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 4 (78-55), Mets 1 (65-68) WP: Hanson (9-10) LP: Pelfrey (13-8) SV: Wagner (31) Tommy Hanson went through a spell in August where he had 5 straight starts allowing 1 earned run or less. During that stint, he did not win a game. Must have been maddening. So he went out and had a couple of stinkers in a row...and came back tonight with an absolutely dominant performance against the Mets: 7 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the one hit was to David Wright...his first at Turner Field all year. That's a streak I would have loved to see get finished off tomorrow...imagine going something like 0/33 in a park on a season. That must have been terrible. Jonny Venters pitched the 8th and struggled, allowing a walk, a double, and a run but striking out 2 and throwing 22 pitches in the process. I'd like to see him start getting some more days off down the stretch...he's starting to get gassed and his stuff doesn't look the best right now. A lot more hittable. Billy Wagner had an effortless 9th to pick up the save. Offensively? Omar Infante and Jason Heyward combined to go 7/8 with 3 runs scored and a pair of RBI. Yeah, there's your offense. Heyward had a pair of doubles and a pair of singles, while Infante had 3 singles. The other 2 RBI came courtesy of Martin Prado, and were actually the first 2 runs of the game in the first inning, as he doubled in...the two men in front of him, who led the game off with hits. That was all the offense that Hanson needed tonight. Rick Ankiel added a pair of singles for the hell of it too. Freddie Freeman went 0/3 in his major league debut, but had a couple of hard hit balls...had a hit taken away in his first at bat thanks to a SHIFT on. Who puts a shift on a rookie in his first AB? Weird...speaking of weird, the Braves only walked once tonight. Shocking. In today's divisional race update...the Phillies won earlier today in LA, so the lead in the East remains at 3 games. In the race for homefield advantage...the Padres lost, and the Reds are winning...so the Braves have a game and half lead on San Diego, and are up half a game on Cincy...with that gap probably being closed tonight. Good times. Braves look for the 4 game sweep tomorrow, and its a Tim Hudson start! Yay! Mets counter with their one useful pitcher left, Johan Santana. He's lost his last 3 starts, so that's a good thing, right? Just a FYI...the recap may be up a little late tomorrow. It'll still be up before midnight...but it might be later.
