Game Recap - 9/13/10

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Braves 4 (83-62), Nationals 0 (60-84) WP: Lowe (12-11) LP: Maya (0-2) "Tomorrow’s game features the Nats coming to town…thank god. Newly signed Yuniesky Maya makes his second career start for Washington against Derek Lowe. Sweet…runs shouldn’t be an issue for either team tomorrow." The lesson as always...I'm an idiot. Derek Lowe was, quite frankly, freaking amazing tonight. 8 shutout inning, 6 hits, no walks, and a career high 12 strikeouts. I mean...seriously? Apparently, he was throwing a new cutter tonight...whatever the hell he was throwing, it was working. The funny part...he only threw first pitch strikes to 11 of the 28 batters he faced. Looks like he was working with whatever he was throwing, and it was tough sledding at first...but hey, it ended really well for him, so its all good. Billy Wagner struck out the side in the 9th. He's so good. Offensively...the Braves had one big inning, but thats all the team needed. Leadoff walks to Brian McCann and Derrek Lee in the 2nd led to a pair of runs after a pair of balks scored McCann, and a Nate McLouth double brought in Lee. Matt Diaz tripled in McLouth, and Omar Infante singled in Diaz. Boom, 4 runs, a couple extra base hits, a couple hits with runners in scoring position...thats all you need. Only Infante and Jason Heyward reached multiple times, Infante with a pair of singles and Heyward with a hit by pitch and a walk. The rookie's OBP now sits at .400. He's 21 years old, and has a .400 OBP. He's good. Every Brave reached base once aside from Martin Prado, who went 0/4 with a pair of strikeouts. Ruh roh...he's starting to struggle! OPS is down to .830...this worries me, especially as a 2-hole hitter. McLouth's double extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Hooray for a legit center fielder! Phillies are beating the tar out of the Marlins, so no ground will be picked up there. Giants are idle tonight, so the lead in the wild card moves up to a game and a half. The Padres are up 2-0 on Colorado, so ground will be picked up on one of them regardless...I approve. Tomorrow: the ageless Livan Hernandez takes on the enigmatic Jair Jurrjens. Interesting matchup...Hernandez actually has a contract for next year with Washington. Unreal. JJ needs a good outing after getting shelled on Thursday against the Cards.
